Tottington Woodlanders

We are a registered charity which manages an area of ancient woodland next to the village of Small Dole near Henfield in West Sussex.

The Coppicing Season Is Upon Us!

It is less than two weeks before Parajumper Svart the first cut of the season that is open to all.  The first session is on Guy Fawkes; Sunday 5th. November 2017.  We meet in the wood at 09:30 (provided the weather is not too wet or especially too windy) and work on until lunchtime.  We then plan to meet every Sunday until the clocks change on Sunday 25th. March 2018.  This is coincidentally Lady Day, the date when coppicing traditionally ceased in the past. If Cheap Vans Shoes you have not been coppicing before you will be made very welcome .  You do not need to join Tottington Woodlanders to work with us, but if you decide you wish to, it will only cost you £2.50.  There will be a two week break at Christmas on the 24th. and 31st. December 2017.

Training and tools are provided so you do not need to bring a lot of equipment, but if you prefer to use your own tools that is okay.  The tools we use are 21″ bow saw or pruning saw, billhook and loppers.  It can be hard work, but you can take your time and there is no pressure to do more than you are comfortable with.

The only vital equipment you will need to bring is a cup for your drink.  This is important because we do not bring many spare cups!  Clearly you will be in a working wood, so suitable footwear and clothing is essential.  We are all volunteers, and it is as important to be enjoying what we are doing as to getting the work done.  Wearing uncomfortable or inappropriate clothing can diminish the experience.  This does not mean you need to rush out and buy a whole new “woodland wardrobe”.  Most of us wear our oldest, warmest and tattiest clothes.  That way they cannot get ruined if they snag on a bramble or a spark from the fire lands on them.  Because we are working with a fire, where possible, avoid man-made fibres that will melt with heat or are highly flammable.

Most of the work this season will be to the north of the wood in . If you are arriving by car, you can park next to Small Dole village hall, but NOT IN THE VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK.  If you follow the Margaret Mackley Disabled Access Path (labled) you will arrive at the work site.  If the weather is poor it is worth checking our Golden Goose Slide Pas Cher Facebook page (Friends of Tottington Wood) to see if the work day has been cancelled.  Often we wait until the last minute to make the decision, so wait until about 08:30 before looking.  After your first visit we can provide you with telephone numbers to contact us, but we do not post numbers on the internet, for security reasons.
